Painted Purple Hills
(16 x 20 inches)
2006

I took a painting class during the summer of 2006, and this is an acrylic painting done during that time. "Purple Hills" was done from my imagination and looked totally different in its first several incarnations. My teacher gave me lots of useful advice. A straight shoreline became the water working its way off at an angle. The mountains changed shape a couple of times, bushes were added in the foreground, and, lastly, the birch trees were painted in. There were also some incredibly white puffy clouds that I grayed down so that they would fade into the background. My teacher's advice, repeated several times over the summer, was "don't try to paint from your imagination."
